Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas (I know it’s a little late) and Happy New Year Everyone!

I hope everyone’s Christmas (or to be PC, holiday) was a good one.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

We were pretty busy. We had the boy’s birthday/Christmas party. Munchkin just turned 4 on the 23rd and Peanut turned 2 today. Where in the world does the time go? I know, I know. Horribly cliché, but it is true! My babies are growing up way too fast.

My mom and her husband came down and stayed the week with us. It was great to see them, but I am glad to have the house back to normal. Well, sort of normal.

The sort of normal is because Lily had her puppies. Labor started the day my mom came (the 21st). She had her first pup about 9pm and the last one between 2 & 2:30am  on the 22nd. She had 9 puppies,  8 of them live. That’s a lot of puppies. They are very cute, but all I can envision is 8 crazy puppies destroying my house. . . . Luckily, we will have help from the local rescue with placing them in homes. That takes a huge weight off of my shoulders. I am guessing you would like to see some pictures? I suppose I can do that 🙂

That brings us to now. New Year’s Eve. I don’t do very much anymore. Mainly just sit on the couch. Maybe have a beer. Watch something on Hulu or Netflix. I am happy with that though.

I am not really sure what I expect from 2013. My goals for this year didn’t get fully accomplished, but I have been headed in the right direction. So I guess I will just keep at those goals and whatever else happens is an added bonus 🙂

I hope you all have fun celebrating the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013.

What are your expectations for this new year?

C’est La Vie

Sorry for my absence. Life has been zooming by. I don’t even know how long it has been since my last post. . . .

Did you all have a good Thanksgiving? We did. My mom and her husband came down for a visit. We had dinner at our house, so my in-laws came over as well. I think Munchkin was in his glory, he had all his favorite people under one roof. We took the boys to go see Wreck-It Ralph that Saturday. They did great and it was a cute movie.

I have been working on my WIC peer counselor training the last few weeks. It is exciting. I get to talk about breastfeeding with pregnant mamas. The boys have been spending a lot of time with Grandma as she has been watching them for me while I do the training and when I clean that house once a week. I am very grateful to have her so close. The boys enjoy going over there. Peanut has an easier time with my leaving then Munchkin does. As soon as I get back to bring them home though, Peanut wants his milkies (which he calls “mine”) immediately.

Peanut has been talking up a storm and repeats everything he hears. Luckily he hasn’t repeated any of the less than nice words that have escaped my mouth on occasion. It is cute listening and watching him copy everything his big brother does.

Munchkin is still in the in-between phase where he wants to be a big boy, but whines and cries because he wants you to help him do everything too. It keeps things interesting. 🙂 I love it when he tries out new words he hears and new gestures too. Today he gave me a thumbs up when I asked him if something was good.

On the animal/homestead end of things, we lost two chickens. I am not sure if it was Lily, who I caught eating them, or if it was the neighbor’s dog that Hubby had chased out of the yard when he caught him going after a chicken.

Lily went into heat and we tried to be diligent, but said neighbor’s dog managed to get hold of her and so now we should have puppies around Christmas. *sigh* Not especially happy, but “c’est la vie”

I was telling Munchkin that Lily has babies in her belly so he needs to not be so rough with her. Tonight he was talking about the babies in his belly. He has 5 or 6 of them in there. We are going to be busy 😉

My sister’s rabbit is hilarious. Nothing phases him. He quickly adjusted to the chaos that is our life. He gets free time in the house when the dogs are out. He hops onto the couch, pushes open doors if they aren’t shut tight, steals food off the kid’s table, begs when you are cutting up vegetables. He acts like a one of the dogs or the cats. I got this cute pic of him washing his face. Looks like he is saying “Oh no, what have I done” Bandit

Tuesday

Aside from being awake half the night with a coughing Peanut, the day was pretty good. I brought K to work for 7:30, when I got back home the boys were still sleeping. I sat down with some coffee and brought up Revolution on Hulu. I think I like the show. I am not really attached to any shows yet this season. I got about half way through before I was joined by the boys.

It was chilly in the house, so  decided to make some cookies. You know, to warm up the house 🙂 I made some Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies from My Baking Addiction. They are pretty delicious. Soft and cake-like. I made 36, there are now 14 left. . . . If you want the recipe, click here .

Yum!

After picking K up from work, I laid down with Peanut to get him down for a nap and ended up napping myself. I needed it. I don’t get much sleep when the boys are sick.

Munchkin has been pretty low key due to this cold. Hubby set him up with some video games and K found him a leapster on Ebay. He has been pretty happy with those. He is on the mend now. I think yesterday was his worst day.

Munchkin, yesterday. Napping on the couch.

The night ended well. I got to give Milkies to a goat magnet, a deer magnet, and then finally a sheep magnet as well as Peanut. So silly.

This evening has ended with the smell of skunk filling the air. I was hoping it wasn’t our dogs. No such luck. Lily didn’t really get it, Sawyer got it pretty good. I have no energy to bathe him right now though. The house is a little stinky. As soon as I get back from bringing K to work in the morning, I will hose him down.

Playing with photo editing

I have been playing around with the online photo editing program Pixlr Editor. It is pretty cool and easy to use. My favorite thing to do is to do a color splash in a black and white photo. Is that the right terminology for that? Oh well, either way it is fun. Here are some samples of my recent editing adventures.

Happenings

This week has been busy.

K started her job at the Montessori School. We have been adjusting to the early wake up time and the driving. It’s about an hour and fifteen minutes round trip. We do this in the morning and the afternoon. The boys end up napping when we go to pick her up, so it works out pretty good. I have been trying to take advantage of the trips and attend playdates, hit up the playground, etc. Yesterday we met up with some friends at the splash pad and played in the water for three hours. The boys had a blast and both crashed on the way home.

The boys when we just got to the splash pad

We had a decent storm roll through on the way home yesterday. Just as we were getting into town it started pouring and the wind picked up. Visibility was low, everything was the same color gray. It was crazy. Luckily by the time we reached the house it had died down so we didn’t get drenched trying to get us all unloaded from the car. The animals were not happy though. Lily somehow got loose from her tie-out and was just running amuck. The goats were yelling at the top of their lungs.

And, we were missing a chicken. The White Leghorn, Franny. I searched everywhere and could not find her. Hubby went out later and looked too, but she was nowhere to be found. We did find her this evening. Unfortunately she was not alive. She was in a place Hubby and I had both looked already. We aren’t sure what happened. . .

RIP Franny

Today I came to the realization that Ms. Rocky is actually Mr. Rocky. (“Chandler’s a girl!”, lol thanks K for that Friends memory). His tail feathers are starting to look long and curvy. He and Buffy have been puffing out their neck feathers and kicking their feet up at each other. So now I am starting to wonder about Buffy too. . . .The other morning when I was in the shed and all the chickens were still sitting on their roost (yes, they all now go up there on their own and stay there all night!), someone crowed. I was feeding the goats so I had my back to them. I wasn’t sure who it was and if it was just a fluke. Guess not.

Mr. Rocky

I am excited to see the Perseids tonight. We should have clear skies here in North Mississippi. I love meteor showers. I have fond memories of sitting out in the wee hours wrapped in blankets watching in them. I tried to take Munchkin out before he went to bed to see if we could see any, but he is just entering the “scared” phase. So at every noise he was clinging to me asking “What’s that?” and “I’m scared”. Poor kid. I hope this doesn’t last too long.

Munchkin keeps getting upset with the chickens because they keep running in and eating up the grasshoppers and crickets he is trying to catch. Sometimes it doesn’t bother him and others he comes running to me bawling. I feel bad, but at the same time it is funny.

He has started to put words to his emotions! This is very exciting. We have been trying to help give him those words right along. Lately even more so because he has been physically showing Peanut that he is mad about something. We keep reminding him that we need to use our words not violence. It is paying off 🙂

He has been “reading”, and cutting, and gluing. He can trace his letters and numbers very well and is starting to recognize his numbers. He is such a big boy.

Peanut is turning into a little hellion. He is throwing food around more than eating it now. At least he puts his empty dishes in the sink. He will take things and then run off with them so that you chase after him. It is annoying when it is happening, but as I am typing this I am shaking my head and smiling.

He had an episode the other night of what appears to have been “growing pains”. It was awful. He woke up the next morning perfectly fine. I was very relieved.

As I am typing this out this post, I am listening to bump, thump, crunch as Isis, the cat, is walking around on the roof. I suppose I should go get her down.

The goat quarters

Hubby and I worked on the goat (and now chicken) shed Saturday evening.

It sits in a really bad spot on our property. All that rain that we just got (sorry to all the folks experiencing drought right now), the shed ended up with an inch or so of water in the bottom of it. Luckily I had a good layer of bedding in there (I have been using oak shavings and hay) so Hazel and Willow didn’t get their feet wet.

I cleaned it all out and then we laid down some pallets that we picked up at the electric company’s warehouse. We had some peg board lying around that wasn’t being used, so we laid that down on top of the pallets so that the shavings and hay would stay on top and we wouldn’t fall through the pallets and have injured legs.

I put down fresh shavings and hay. We moved the goat’s bowls to the back of the shed. We realized hanging them on the door where the rain can come in, wasn’t really that smart of a plan. Doh!

Then we took one of the smaller trees that Hubby had cut down and trimmed that up and stuck it inside for the chickens to perch on. Yeah, they have officially moved into the shed. I guess they feel safe with the girlies and they have more room. The chickens have been crowding Hazel and Willow up on their shelf, so I thought a perch would be nice, that is where they are supposed to sleep, right? Not my chickens. They like snuggling up with the goats apparently. We even put a nest box in there for them, but Claudette and Georgia walk back to the old coop and still lay their eggs in there. Still nothing, as far as I know, from Rocky and Buffy. It has only been a few days though, so maybe they will come to like their new perch and nesting box. I still feed the chickens back there though because I haven’t figured out a better solution so that Hazel won’t raid the chicken food.

Everyone seems pretty happy with the set-up.

The shed

What kind of set-up do you have for your goats and/or chickens? I am always interested in getting new ideas for them.

Happenings around the homestead.

One of the strangest things I discovered when we moved to Mississippi was crayfish wandering around the yard. It wasn’t something I had ever seen before. Hubby and I thought it was hilarious. We still do. Except for the giant holes and chimneys they leave around the yard.

Image

Crayfish chimney. This is a really short one.

Last night Hubby was walking around the yard hunting for them. He likes to play with them. You know, poke them with sticks and make them fight with him. 😉 This one was one of the bigger ones, probably about four or five inches long.

Crayfish

Lily likes to try and dig the crayfish up. She actually got one the other day. She thought it was a tasty snack.

We also have mushrooms galore after all the rain too. These white ones have been popping up and growing to massive sizes

Big white mushrooms

Then there are these little brown ones. They are growing up in the middle of the lespedeza.

My calendula are continuing to bloom and attract pollinators to the garden.

And so are my sunflowers.

Eggs from the Reds this morning and the loaf of bread I baked last night.

Yay for fresh bread and eggs!

Still waiting on Buffy and Rocky to start laying. If they haven’t all ready started. . . .I keep checking around, but haven’t seen any.

The chickens have started sleeping in the shed with goats. I can’t get the back doors on their coop closed. The wood has swelled considerably from all the rain.

We had a fun filled puddle jumping day on Saturday. We have an issue with flooding in our yard. We are trying to figure out the best course of action to fix this, but until then, we will continue to have fun running through the giant puddles. It is Munchkin and Peanut’s favorite activity. 🙂

Ew

Want to know the absolute best way to be woken up really early in the morning? Like 4:45am early?

Waking up to an incredibly bad odor.

I woke up and was sniffing all around. I checked Peanut’s diaper. Sniffed the bathroom. Where the heck was it coming from? I was still half asleep so it took a few for me to eventually venture my way out to the kitchen.

Oh yeah. There it was. I turned on the light and there was diarrhea everywhere. . . It was like projectile. On the floor, on the wall, on my curtains. . . So gross. Luckily we keep Lily tied up, but she still had six feet of lead.

The Culprit

I woke Hubby up because Peanut had woken up and followed me out to the kitchen. Plus? It was way too big of a mess for one person to tackle.

We got everything cleaned up and stuck Lily outside for the remainder of the morning. It was light out by the time we finished cleaning.

Hubby went back to bed, but Peanut was wide awake. I was getting ready to head back to bed with him at about 6:15am when Munchkin stumbled his way out of the bedroom. I tried to convince him that he wanted to go back to bed with Peanut and I and snuggle. He of course didn’t fall for my sweet talking. He told me it was light out and he was awake and he was really hungry. That is how he starts most days.

I finally got to head back to bed for a nap around 8:30am and proceeded to sleep until 11:30am. I was tired.

The rest of the day was pretty good, aside from everyone being on the tired side.

Here is to hoping we all get a full night of sleep tonight.

Have a good one all.  🙂
